Our Program

The Chemistry Learning Center offers a supportive learning environment where students work with instructors in small groups. Our program is partially funded to work with students who are enrolled programs such as the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE), Center for Educational Opportunity (CeO), PEOPLE, and Posse programs. We also try to welcome first generation students who are low income, underrepresented students, Chancellor Scholars, Powers Knapp Scholars, MJL Scholars, students returning after a long absence from college, students-at-risk of failing the course, students re-taking the course after earning a D or F, students on academic probation, new transfer students, veterans just returning after full-time military service, and McBurney Center students. Though it is helpful to apply early, our program does not function on a first-come first-serve basis. In addition to the above guidelines, we also consider each student on a case-by-case basis taking into account available program space.

Building Community

Recent events that highlight the systemic racism and injustice many of our students of color experience on a daily basis caused great frustration and heartache for our staff. We love and value the students we work with and recognize the anger felt by many. We will continue to work to create a space where all students feel welcomed, valued, and respected. We also recognize the shared responsibility we have to create substantive change by doing our part to reject hate and end injustice.

Updates

  • We’ve moved!

We are now located in Room 4330 Medical Sciences Center (not the Chemistry Building).

  • Change of operation due to COVID-19

Our office is open for in-person services. Please visit the Covid-19 Response page for FAQs, updates, vaccinations, and other information.

  • Courses supported this spring

We are able to support students in Chem 103, Chem 104, and some organic chemistry in Fall 2022. The program does not offer summer support.

  • Applying to the program

Please visit the Apply page. Most students drop by our office (Room 4330) to fill out a paper application form, and we also have an online application form available about one week before classes start in the fall. Please watch the short video describing what we do and who we try to support before applying (thanks!).
